Expedition Base - Voe House Böd, Walls (or Waas)

Travel.  You may choose to travel to the Shetland islands with your car or by foot, on the ferry or by air to Sumburgh airport.  We will have our mini bus and will co-ordinate one collection from both locations if required.  When we know when and how everyone is arriving we will advise of pick up times.  The same applies on our departure day of Saturday 13th July

What's not included in the expedition cost?

Travel to and from the Shetlands is not included but we have included some links at the bottom of this page to help plan your journey.

Insurance.  We highly recommend you take out full travel insurance to cover all eventualities, illness, cancelled ferries, flights, etc etc

Food and drinks are not included.  There is a small shop near Voe House and we can do a food shop on Saturday.  We hope to find a pub or two as well!  We will bring some bulk staples like rice & pasta (that's included!).

Electricity is not included and expedition members will need to ensure they have a supply of £1 coins to keep the meter topped up.

Bedding and Linen is also not included so you will need to bring a towel and a sleeping bag.  For a pillow we tend to use a dry bag stuffed with clothes with a fleece or something wrapped around the outside so it is soft and warm.   Maybe you have another solution!  Let us know..!!

Camping gas.  We can supply standard camping gas canisters if required.  Please advise at time of booking if you require gas or cooking fuel.   Eila now uses a Bio Light stove which burns bits of wood or wood chips.  She will be delighted to supply you free of charge with wood chip pellets in an attempt to help alleviate the gas cansiter wastage!  Please advise if you wish us bring some for you.

Tents / bivvy bags are not included.  As we hope to wild camp from our kayaks for a night or 2 you will need to to bring a bivvy bag or a small, light tent.  Camping will be weather permitting, although the weather can change and be unpredictable.   There is a separate "kit list" of what you need to bring that will be sent to you at time of booking.

Can I come?  What if my roll isn't bombproof?

YES!  It's okay.  We generally find that paddlers at or around the BC 3 - 4 star level will have the skills and stamina to get the most from this exciting  advanced expediton.  The advantage of having 2 leaders, such as Nigel and Eila allows for flexibiity and splitting into 2 groups if necessary with a longer and a shorter option if needed.  We take each day and each individual and ensure that everyone benefits to the best from each paddling day.    You do not need any pre requistes to come on this expedition.

What you do need is a spirit of adventure and be happy in sea state 3-4 & to be happy & condfident in the water in the event of a capsize whilst we manage the rescue.

Do I need to bring any charts or maps with me?

Useful links

With a population of 23,000 and close enough to Norway geographically and historically to make nationallity an ambigous concept, the Shetland Islands are Britain's most northerly outpost.  There's a Scandinavian lilt to the local accent and streets name King Haakon or St Olaf are reminders that Shetland was once under Norse rule until 1469, when it was gifted to Scotland in lieu fo the dowry of a Danish princess.

The Shetlands offer wild and remote  kayaking for the adventurous sea kayak expeditioner.
